MoD withdraws MRTT tender

The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has withdrawn the tender for the purchase of six Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft worth $2 Billion for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Earlier, a tender was issued in July 2010 for the procurement for which Airbus Military A 330 MRTT was shortlisted in July 2012. The reason cited for cancellation is that the Airbus platforms are too expensive and not economically viable to operate. A fresh global procurement is expected to take at least five more years now. Currently, the IAF operates six obsolete IL-78 tanker aircraft bought from Uzbekistan over two decades ago.
